U.S. growers reaped their second-smallest wheat crop in 20 years due to drought in the Plains, said the Agriculture Department. The smaller-than-expected harvest would delay any American role in restoring grain flows disrupted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Wheat futures prices leaped to their highest level in two months following release of the USDA estimate on Friday of a 1.65 billion-bushel crop, a 7.5% reduction from its previous estimate and only 3.6 million bushels larger than last year.
The downturn “opens more uncertainty about the world’s wheat supply, given the increasing tensions about the Black Sea corridor remaining open,” said agricultural economist Jerry Gidel of Midland Research, based in Chicago. Russian president Vladimir Putin denounced the West as “the enemy” while announcing on Friday that Russia would annex four regions of Ukraine.
“We just don’t know what Russia will do,” said Deputy Agriculture Secretary Jewel Bronaugh last week, when asked if Russia would allow continued grain exports from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. “So we have to wait and see and be prepared.”
So far this season, rainy weather has generally increased Australia's wheat crop outlook — Abares in early September forecast the country's wheat harvest at 32.2mn t this year, representing the second-largest production on record after last year's figure — and raised both area and yield projections thanks to optimal flowering and grain-filling conditions. But continuing wet weather could damage crop quality, with Abares citing waterlogging and frost as the biggest potential risks to yields in the coming weeks.

China’s soybean imports are likely to drop to their lowest in more than two years this month,
China , According to industry sources, the demand for June to August 2022 shipments were only at 20 million mt, down by about 10% compared to same period last year. Subsequently, the arrival volume of imported soybeans during the third quarter of 2022 has dropped. The total import volume of soybeans in July and August 2022 was at 15.04 million mt, down by 5.6% compared to same period last year. As a result, many crushing plants have started experiencing shortage in soybeans this month, leading to lower crushing volume and declining soybean meal inventories.

Freight----------------Freightos Baltic Index (FBX): Global Container Freight Index
$ $3,699
Bangladesh’s ocean freight charges have registered a 50% fall from the pandemic-led massive surges as global trade slows because of shrinking demand for goods paired with rising inflation and inventory excesses in destination countries.
Vessel operations on the Chattogram-Europe route now cost $6,000-7,000 per 20-foot container in contrast to $12,500 in December 2021 when the pandemic was at its peak. Similarly, a US-bound ship now charges $10,000 per 20-foot container, down from $20,000, according to the Shipping Agents’ Association.
The easing in supply chain disruptions, which had been built up over the pandemic, is also driving the significant fall in freight rates, industry people say.
But businesses note that they are still paying at least three times more than they did before Covid-19 caused a snarling of global supply chains.
In pre-Covid times, shipment of a 20-foot container would cost $2,500 to Europe and $3,000 to the United States.
