The Russian blockade of Ukrainian wheat risks worsening global food supply shortages and famine in parts of the world as the breadbasket of Europe is cut off, says the UN crisis co-ordinator for Ukraine.
Russia has been blockading the country's ports, stopping any ships from leaving or entering harbours. The waters around those ports have also been littered with mines, which the two countries blame each other for, and further complicate any potential export of grains.
Ukraine has tried to export grains through neighbouring countries, such as Poland, en route to the Baltic Sea,
He said sea transport remains Ukraine's only viable option to export its roughly 20 million tonnes of grain, which is an issue since the eastern European country is a global supplier.

The INDIAN government has received requests for wheat supplies from at least five countries including Indonesia, one of the world’s largest importers of the grain, and Bangladesh after India banned wheat exports last month, a government official said.
“Following the ban India has received requests from Indonesia, Oman, UAE, Bangladesh and Yemen. The government is evaluating their wheat requirements and availability of wheat with us," the official said.
Trade experts said Bangladesh could be looking for more wheat imports from India as it not only imported nearly half the total wheat exported by India but also was a buyer of wheat from Russia and Ukraine.
TURKEY , “Claims that Turkey will face a wheat crisis after India banned exports of wheat and that bread prices will increase because the country cannot buy wheat from Ukraine and Russia are also not true,” it said, noting that India uses most of its wheat production to meet domestic consumption and that India stopped wheat exports as a measure to fight rising inflation.
Morocco’s wheat imports from Brazil reached 360,000 tons during the first four months of 2022, a 632% year-on-year increase, according to data from the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce reported by the Valley Post.During the same period, almost half of Brazil’s wheat exports went to Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Sudan, and Egypt, which grew fourfold, the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce says.
At the end of April, Brazil exported 2.3 million tons of wheat, up from 568,000 tons in the same period last year, up by 313% year-to-year.

Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures weakened on Friday, after nearing an all-time high during a rally in the previous session that was fueled by strong export demand and concerns about U.S. supplies.
Supply concerns remained, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture cut its estimates for 2021/22 domestic ending stocks to 205 million bushels in a monthly report. That was down from USDA’s May estimate for 235 million and below analysts’ expectations for 218 million.
China imported 20 per cent more soybeans in May than in April, as some delayed cargoes arrived, customs data showed.
China, the world’s top soybean importer, brought in 9.67 million tonnes of the oilseed in May, up from 8.08 million tonnes in April, data from the General Administration of Customs showed.
The May figures, slightly higher than 9.61 million tonnes a year earlier, were on the high end of market expectations. Poor crush margins in China have weighed down demand from crushers.
“May imports were up marginally compared to last year, however some of that increase is likely shipments that were delayed in unloading due to the COVID situation and port congestion and are showing up in the data now,” said Darin Friedrichs, co-founder of Shanghai-based consultancy Sitonia Consulting.

Chicago corn futures slid on Tuesday, with better-than-expected condition of the U.S. crop easing concerns over world supplies and adding pressure on prices.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Monday rated 73% of the U.S. corn crop as good to excellent in its first condition ratings for the 2022 crop, above the average estimate of 68% in a Reuters analyst poll.
