Agriant Commodities------------ 03-07-2022

Hot Topics----------------------

“Another negative week for prices as the advancing U.S. harvest, continued talks around the Ukrainian export corridors, concerns over global inflationary pressure and commodity demand as a result all weigh on prices,” British merchant ADM Agriculture Ltd said of wheat.

Russia’s plans to ease the burden of an export tax to help shift an expected record crop were also curbing wheat prices, traders said

The latest analysis, shared by the top U.S. intelligence official late Wednesday, further suggests there may be an opening to bring the current fighting in Ukraine to an end, even if Russia sees it only as a chance to better position itself for future conquest.

“We assess at this stage that their [Russia’s] ground forces have been degraded to the point where it will take them years to get back to where they were," Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines said late Wednesday, during a discussion in Washington hosted by the Silverado Policy Accelerator and tech giant Google.

Even their near-term military objectives are really not capable of being achieved by their military right now," Haines said. “It is entirely plausible, from our perspective, that depending on how things develop over the coming months and so on that he [Putin] is convinced that there is value in effect, coming to some sort of agreement."

Better weather and a brief drop in demand recently helped bring futures for the grain to a four-month low, but analysts say the food commodity may have hit a floor.

After a feverish series of months where the price of wheat hit a decade high after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the grain recently saw a sharp drop in futures prices.

Reuters reported on Monday that U.S. wheat futures fell to their lowest point since February. And front-month wheat futures on the Chicago Board of Trade in the U.S. and on the Matif futures exchange in the European Union are both down 20% since mid-May, according to Paul Hughes, chief agricultural economist with S&P Global Commodity Insights. He cited a few factors for the decline.

Meanwhile, Australia, which is one of the biggest exporters of wheat, is expected to produce a bumper crop

Egypt’s state grains buyer, the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), bought 815,000 tonnes of mainly French wheat in a tender, marking its biggest single purchase in years as prices slightly ease.

The purchase comprised 350,000 tonnes of French wheat, 240,000 tonnes of Romanian wheat, 175,000 tonnes of Russian wheat and 50,000 tonnes of Bulgarian wheat, GASC said.

The amount will be shipped in August, September and October 2022.

The lowest cost and freight offer was for Romanian wheat at $429.90 a tonne, traders said, a 10% drop from the lowest offer purchased in GASC’s last tender in June but still a 58% rise from a Romanian purchase made around the same period last year.

Chicago soybean prices eased on Friday as recession fears cast a pall on commodity markets and traders took a cautious view on the U.S. government’s sharp cut to its soybean planting estimate.

After an initial rally following Thursday’s U.S. Department of Agriculture acreage report, the market was waiting to see if the steep downward revision to soybean planting would be amended later in the season.

“The USDA also said it will resurvey some places,” said a China-based trader, referring to the agency’s plan to collect updated planting information in some states.
