Russian wheat exporters are bidding aggressively for new business, even though they don’t know how much tax they will need to pay to ship the grain as Moscow steps up its fight to curb domestic food inflation.
Russia, one of the world’s leading wheat exporters, will launch a formula-based wheat export tax from June 2 aimed at cooling domestic grain prices. It will be set weekly and will replace the current fixed tax of 50 euros ($60) a tonne.
The state buyer of giant wheat importer Egypt bought 290,000 tonnes of Russian wheat in its tender on April 6 seeking new crop shipment in August, with Russian wheat offered cheaper than rivals such as the European Union.
Ukrainian wheat export prices have resumed growth last week, adding $5 a tonne over the week amid uncertainty over the weather in the United States and Europe, the APK-Inform agriculture consultancy said on Monday.

US soybean futures prices surged to their highest level in seven years on weather concerns in the Midwest, coupled with Brazilian supply woes, market sources told S&P Global Platts April 21.
Argentina’s soybean production in the 2021-22 marketing year will be boosted by an increased planting area, according to a Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
As Chinese swine herds recover from African swine fever and global demand for soybeans rebound, Argentina is expected to export 6.5 million tonnes of whole soybeans in the 2021-22 marketing year while whole soybean imports are anticipated to fall 11% to 45 million tonnes. The USDA estimates soymeal exports to total 28 million tonnes and soy oil exports to remain flat at 6.3 million tonnes, based on increased domestic industrial consumption for biodiesel production absorbs the increased volume from higher crush.
