The weekly Commitment of Traders report showed CBT wheat spec traders were again net short as of the 7/6 close. Net new selling from week to week left the group 13,617 contracts net short. In KC wheat, managed money funds were also net selling through the week that ended 7/6. The 1,843 contract swing left them 20,880 contracts net long. Spec traders also reduced their net long exposure in MPLS wheat through the week, though the 1,143 contract reduction came by way of long liquidation.

The International Grains Council (IGC) forecasts Ukraine’s total 2021-22 grains production at 74.2 million tonnes, up from 64.9 million the year before. The wheat crop is put at 27.2 million tonnes, up from 25.5 million, while production of maize is predicted to rise to 37.3 million tonnes from 30 million in 2020-21. Ukraine’s production of barley is forecast at 8.1 million tonnes in 2021-22, up from 8 million the year before. The country also is expected to produce an unchanged 400,000 tonnes of oats.

An increase in planted area and government support for an increase in minimum support price is expected to push Pakistan’s wheat production to a new record, according to a Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Wheat production is expected to be 27 million tonnes in the 2021-22 marketing year, an 8% increase over the 25 million tonnes produced in the previous year.

The USDA acreage report delivered estimates for the area of corn planted in the USA that surprised the market yesterday, causing a strong rally in corn prices. Estimated planted corn acreage came in at 92.7 million acres. While this was up 2% or 1.9 million acres from the 2020 crop, the market expectation was more bearish, with recent Reuters surveys pitching the analyst consensus at 93.8 million acres. This estimate overshot the official government estimates by 1.1 million acres or 1%.

The farmers in the United States aren’t the only ones struggling this year.
